Stick to non-aligned principles, members tell Govt Tuesday, December 7 2004 22:39 Hrs (IST) - World Time

Members in Lok Sabha today (Dec 7, 2004) asked the Government to adhere to non-aligned principles of India's foreign policy which, some said had been violated by the erstwhile NDA (National Democratic Alliance) regime and asked the Government not to go beyond training Iraqi poll personnel.
"Any involvement of India in conducting elections in Iraq will amount to accepting the US aggression and will go against wishes of the Iraqi people," CPI (Communist Party of India) member S Sudhakar Reddy said while initiating a special discussion on India's foreign policy.
In the same vein, CPM (Communist Party Marxist) leader Rupchand Pal said the Government "should not go beyond training Iraqi poll personnel" and described the present Iraqi Government as "illegitimate".
K S Rao (Cong) warned the Government not to fall prey to US machinations and blamed Washington for supplying weapons to Pakistan and "creating mistrust" between New Delhi and Islamabad.
Laxmi Narayan Pandey of BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) asked the Government to concentrate on improving relations with neighbouring countries which, he said, would lead to improvement in India's global positioning.
Asking the Government not to "waver" or succumb under pressure from the US, Reddy said the Government should follow principles of multi-polarity as against unipolar world dominated by the US.
He asked the Government to clarify its stand on the Palestine issue vis-a-vis the growing relations with Israel during the NDA regime.
