NDA MPs to visit 'jailed' Seer & Kanchi Mutt Tuesday, December 7 2004 18:46 Hrs (IST) - World Time
New Delhi:
Stepping up its campaign on the Kanchi Shankaracharya issue, the Opposition NDA (National Democratic Alliance) would send a delegation of its MPs later this week to meet the Seer at the Vellore Jail and visit the Mutt and submit its report to the central leadership.
Alleging that the Seer was being denied access to medicines, Mutt officials were being tortured and decades-old cases were being resurrected, BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) deputy leader in Lok Sabha V K Malhotra today (Dec 6, 2004) told reporters in New Delhi that about 4-5 MPs belonging to the Opposition alliance would study the "Human Rights violations" against Mutt officials besides "misuse of state machinery" and "danger to the Pontiff's life".
He said the names of the delegation members would be finalised once NDA Convenor George Fernandes returns to the capital.
Besides Fernandes, BJP leaders Murli Manohar Joshi, Sushma Swaraj and Jana Krishnamurthy and suspended party leader Uma Bharati have already met the Seer in the Vellore Jail, where he is in judicial custody in connection with a murder case.
BJP had earlier staged a three-day sit-in near the Parliament House in New Delhi in protests against the "treatment" being meted out to the Seer.
