Forensic experts probing Telgi's voice samples Tuesday, December 7 2004 17:59 Hrs (IST) - World Time
Pune:
A team of scientists belonging to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi today (Dec 7, 2004) began taking voice samples of six accused in the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam, including the prime accused Abdul Karim Telgi at the Yerawada Central Jail in Pune where they are lodged, official sources said.
The Special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court on Dec 2, 2004 had accorded permission to the CBI to take voice samples of the six accused following an application by Additional Superintendent of Police (CBI), S K Peshin, in this regard.
Special Judge S M Shembole, while allowing the CBI's plea had said, "In view of the order dated October 12 of the Bombay High Court, permission as sought is granted. Inform according the Superintendent of the Central Jail, Yerwada."
In its order on October 12, the Bombay High Court had allowed the CBI to obtain voice samples of Abdul Karim Telgi, former Samajwadi Party MLA Anil Gote, Manoj Mehta, Dilip Kamath, Azim Telgi and Abdul Rashid Kulkarni.
Justice A M Khanvilkar had allowed CBI's plea after the agency said it wanted to compare the voices of the accused with those appearing in 14 audio CDs that had been given to them by the Karnataka's Special Investigation Team (SIT).
The Karnataka SIT had intercepted telephonic talks between Telgi and other accused, which throw light on their alleged involvement in the fake stamp paper case.
Senior CBI officials were with the CFSL team during the work to match the voice samples of the six accused, official sources said.
