'Nepal cannot be used for anti-India activities'
Thursday, December 9 2004 09:59 Hrs (IST) - World Time

New Delhi: Ahead of the proposed conference on Kashmir organised by an American think-tank in Kathmandu to be attended by Hurriyat leaders, Nepal has made it clear that it will not allow its soil to be used for anti-India activities.

"Nepal shares a very cordial relation with India and we will not allow anyone to use our soil to indulge in activities that cause material harm to India," Nepalese Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Dip Kumar Upadhyaya said.

Spotlight: Kashmir is Not Negotiable

Elaborating on the special relation his country enjoyed with India, Upadhyaya said Indian citizens to Nepal could visit the country with any identification document "including voters identity card, driving license or an official identity card."

This statement may hamper the visit of senior Hurriyat leaders as, barring Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, no other separatist leader has any passport or a Government identity card.

Firebrand Jamait-e-Islami leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani has an identity card of being an ex-MLA of the JK legislative Assembly, against which he had been drawing pension.

These leaders were likely to attend the two-day conference on Kashmir being organised by Pugwash, an American think-tank, which has been in favour of division of Jammu and Kashmir on the basis of the Dixon Plan.

Asked specifically about the visit of Hurriyat leaders to Kathmandu, he said, "Anyone entering the Himalayan Kingdom should have valid identification documents."
