Rajya Sabha gives seal of approval; POTA repealed

New Delhi: Parliament tonight (Dec 9, 2004) passed the Prevention of Terrorism (Repeal) Bill and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Bill with the Rajya Sabha giving its seal of approval by a voice vote amidst walkout by main Opposition BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party). The Samajwadi Party abstained from voting while AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) opposed the Bills.

The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Bill will replace POTA.

The Bills were passed in Lok Sabha on Monday (Dec 6, 2004).
