London:
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) has been adjudged one of the top universities in the world for science, according to a global survey of academics.
The IIT is ranked 31st among the top 100 universities in the world. Incidentally it is the only university from India to come into reckoning in the survey.
While Britain's Cambridge University topped the list followed by Oxford, America's Harvard University came third, California Berkeley fourth and MIT, Boston was fifth.
Japan's Tokyo University is seventh after Stanford (US). America's Princeton University is adjudged eighth followed by California Institute of Technology, at the ninth position.
The Imperial College of London is tenth followed by China's Beijing University (eleventh).
The three British universities were the only European representatives in the Top Ten. American universities claimed six places and Tokyo University was the only leading institution from outside the US and Britain.
The rankings have been compiled by The Times Higher Education Supplement which asked 1,300 academics in 88 countries to identify the top university in their areas of expertise.
