Spat issue: Laloo's denial is breach of privilege
Friday, December 10 2004 16:21 Hrs (IST) - World Time

New Delhi: The notices of breach of privilege given by NDA (National Democratic Alliance) members against Railway Minister Laloo Prasad for allegedly misleading the House on the issue of his spat with his Cabinet colleague Ram Vilas Paswan is under his consideration, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said today (Dec 10, 2004).

Chatterjee made the observation after BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) Deputy leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra raised the matter during Zero Hour.

Malhotra said that Laloo had misled the House by denying that he had ever made allegations of corruption against Paswan who also later denied that he had spoken against Laloo.

The charges made by Laloo against Paswan were on record and published in various newspapers and magazines, he said adding that the Railway Minister's denial was breach of privileges of members.

The Speaker said that he had received notices of breach of privilege from Malhotra and Sushil Kumar Modi (both BJP), Prabhunath Singh of JD-U (Janata Dal-United) and P C Thomas (Kerala Congress) against Laloo for allegedly misleading the House on the spat issue.

"The matter is under my consideration," he said.

Malhotra then staged a walkout along with NDA members saying that they were leaving the House as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had not given a clarification on the Laloo-Paswan spat as demanded by them.
