Chennai:
The legendary figure in Carnatic music, M S Subbulakshmi, who passed away in Chennai around midnight last night due to 'broncho pneumonia', will be cremated with full police honours this evening (Dec 12, 2004).
The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, has directed the Public Works Minister, O Panneerselvam and the information secretary, to represent the State Government at the funeral, the Chief Minister said in a statement this evening.
In a revised condolence message, she said with the passing away of Subbulakshmi, an era in the saga of Carnatic classical music had come to an end.
"She has left behind a void that can never be filled," she said adding that ''there has never been anyone like her before and there will never be one like her ever again''.
"Our only consolation is that though her physical presence will no longer be amongst us, her divine voice will continue to live amongst us and will continue to enthral millions of people all over the world in the form of records, tapes, audio cassettes, compact discs etc, as long as this world last," Jayalalithaa said.
