Pappu denies talking on seized mobile from Beur jail
Sunday, December 12 2004 20:18 Hrs (IST) - World Time

Patna: Controversial RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav's State representative today (Dec 12, 2004) denied that the MP used to talk to ministers and officials on mobile phone which was seized during raids on Beur jail on Wednesday (Dec 8, 2004) and charged Opposition NDA (National Democratic Alliance) with trying to reap political benefit out of the issue.

Incarcerated Pappu Yadav's State representative Surendra Singh Yadav told reporters in Patna that the mobile phone 3126926 was registered in the name of the MP's sister Anita Ranjan which remains with his father Chandra Narayan Yadav.

He said during visiting hours in the Beur jail, on the directives of the MP, his private secretary or father used to talk to the ministers or somebody else from outside the prison.

"On Dec 5, 2004, as usual the MP's father and his PS had gone to meet him during visiting hours and by mistake the said mobile phone was left behind in the prison," he said.

Describing as 'lie' that the mobile was recovered from the shoe of Pappu Yadav, he said the mobile was seized from the possession of another inmate and not from the MP.

The authorities even did not take the signature of Pappu Yadav on the seizure list, he alleged.

The MP's representative claimed that Pappu Yadav was on hunger strike in the jail for the past nine days and despite his worsening condition the authorities had not paid any attention.

Blaming the jail authorities for 'callous' approach towards the MP, who was having serious health problem, he said they had approached the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC).

Pappu's wife and LJP (Lok Janshakti Party) MP, Ranjeeta Ranjan, was planning to bring privilege motion in the Lok Sabha against the Beur jail administration, he said.

He blamed the NDA for trying to gain politically over the mobile controversy but 'they would not get anything'.
