Two killed as bomb rips through Shahrukh's concert Sunday, December 12 2004 12:06 Hrs (IST) - World Time
Colombo:
A bomb ripped through Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan's mega concert at Colombo's former Race Course open-air stadium tonight (Dec 11, 2004) killing two persons and wounding 18 including a number of children.
The bomb ripped through the 10,000-Rupee stands just as Khan ended his three-hour concert, police said adding the actor and his troupe were unharmed.
Doctors at the national hospital in Colombo said all the victims were Sri Lankans. A 30-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man were killed while a number of children were among the wounded of whom the condition of 12 was stated to be critical.
There were members of the Indian High Commission in the audience but they escaped unhurt.
There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.
"There were a lot of fireworks and everyone thought this was also part of that. Then we realised that we were bleeding," a doctor at Colombo's national hospital quoted one of the injured as saying.
"Two persons were dead when they were brought," the doctor said adding "there are another 15 injured admitted of which 12 are critical. They all have shrapnel injuries caused by hand grenade or a hand bomb."
The concert was held despite protests by Buddhist monks who said the musical show coincided with the first death anniversary of a popular monk. But some of them went on the rampage continuing with their protests prompting police to use force.
