Cancel 75 NRI admissions in WB med colleges: SC Tuesday, December 14 2004 22:49 Hrs (IST) - World Time
New Delhi:
The Supreme Court today (Dec 13, 2004) expressed displeasure over non-compliance of its orders by the West Bengal Government and directed it to immediately cancel admissions of 75 NRI candidates taken in two medical colleges run by the State in excess of the sanctioned strength.
A Bench of Justice Y K Sabharwal and Justice P P Naolekar passed the order after hearing counsel Sanjeev Sen on behalf of meritorious students, who alleged that the State had not complied with the court's October 29 order.
The court had on October 29 last noticed that two State-run medical colleges had admitted 105 NRI students against a total 200 seats available.
The court had directed that a maximum of 30 NRI students could be admitted and the rest seats should be given to meritorious students who cleared the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).
The Bench today said after cancelling the admissions of 75 excess NRI candidates the vacant seats would be filled by meritorious students within 5 days.
The Bench asked the Chief Secretary of the State to file report before the court within seven days and posted the matter for further hearing in the first week of January.
