Junior Seer's brother accuses police of torture Monday, December 13 2004 15:08 Hrs (IST) - World Time
Chennai:
Raghu, the brother of junior Shankaracharya of the Kanchi Mutt Vijayendra Saraswathi, has accused the police of "mentally torturing" him during interrogation in the Sankararaman murder case.
Raghu, who was interrogated for three consecutive days by the police in connection with the case, in which Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati is an accused, alleged that the police "tortured him mentally by talking nasty about his family members".
"I am ready to answer whatever questions they have asked. But that mental torture, that talk about family can upset anybody," a visibly shaken Raghu told a private television.
Accusing the police of "harassing" him, he quoted them as saying that "We will implicate you in false cases. If not this case then we will file another case."
He said the police did not resort to any physical torture, but the mental harassment broke him. "I almost lost my breath," he said.
About the questions asked by the police team, he said, "They asked about Jayendra Saraswati and I told them what I know."
He alleged that the interrogators said they would implicate him in the high-profile case when he refused to answer some questions about which he did not had any clue.
"I told them everything I knew. But what if I don't know. I told them that I don't know and then they said you are the reason why the Seer was arrested. You too are accused and involved in the case," he said.
