Advani takes tough line: MPs must explain absence
Tuesday, December 14 2004 19:43 Hrs (IST) - World Time

New Delhi: A week after expressing concern over the poor attendance of party MPs in Parliament, BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) president L K Advani today (Dec 14, 2004) adopted a tough line asking the Parliamentary party to seek their explanation in writing and directing them to be regular in attending all meetings and votings.

Addressing the weekly BJP Parliamentary party meeting in New Delhi, Advani took exception to several party MPs not taking part in voting to various boards such as Tea Board which took place last week, party sources said.

They said he was also upset over the absence of some MPs at the Parliamentary party meeting.

While none of the BJP nominees were defeated in the elections to various Boards and member of other parties too were absent, the Leader of the Opposition felt that the party MPs should take part actively in the voting.

The BJP chief, who wants the party to play the role of an aggressive Opposition, asked the Parliamentary party to prepare a list of such "erring" MPs and send them individual letters seeking explanation for their absence.

At the last Parliamentary party meeting too, Advani had expressed concern over the poor attendance of MPs and asked them to actively participate in Parliamentary debates.

Most MPs have taken cover of marriages in their families and constituencies to justify their absence so far, the sources added.
