Punjab Govt announces compensation to train victims

Mukerian (Punjab): The Punjab Government today (Dec 14, 2004) announced an ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh each to the next of kin of those killed in the train mishap near Mukerian.

The announcement to this effect was made by Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, who along with Assembly Speaker Kewal Krishan visited the accident site.

Those injured in the accident would be given Rs 25,000 each and the cost of treatment would be borne by the Government, Singh, who saw the damaged coaches and enquired about rescue and relief operations, said.

Singh, who earlier in the Assembly had put the death toll to 50, said the exact figure of the dead was "unconfirmed."

"The victims and injured had been taken to hospitals close-by," he said.

Jammu Tawi Ahmedabad express and Jalandhar-Pathankot passenger train had collided head-on near Mukerian in Hoshiarpur district of Punjab today.

A Civil Hospital spokesman said 43 injured had been brought from the spot, out of which 17 were under treatment, adding that all of them were out of danger.

The remaining 26 had been shifted to DMC Hospital at Ludhiana and Civil Hospitals at Dasuya and Hoshiarpur, he said.
