'Terror claimed a whopping 7,458 lives in India' Wednesday, December 15 2004 14:17 Hrs (IST) - World Time

A total of 7,458 persons were killed in 10,788 incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, North-Eastern States and naxal-affected States during 2003-2004, the Rajya Sabha was informed today (Dec 15, 2004).
During the period upto October 2004, 4,322 persons including civilians, security forces personnel and terrorists were killed in 5,624 incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, 1,860 persons were killed in 2,237 incidents in North-Eastern States and 1,276 persons were killed in 2,927 incidents in naxal-affected States, Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said in a written reply.
He said that during the said period, 700 terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, 1,706 extremists in North-Eastern States and 2,552 naxalites in naxal-affected States were arrested, he said.
As per available information 46,587 foreigners were staying illegally in India as on December 31, 2003, he said, adding that the possibility of some of them having acquired ration cards/voter identity cards cannot be ruled out.
The Minister said that about 60 illegal Pakistani immigrants were residing in Punjab and around 4,000 in Rajasthan.
No Kashmiri migrant family has returned to their native places so far, Jaiswal said.
He said that there were 56,148 Kashmiri migrant families, out of whom 34,690 families were living in Jammu, 19,338 in Delhi and 2,120 families in other parts of the country.
As announced by the Prime Minister during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir in November 2004, an inter-ministerial team has been constituted to prepare a plan to rehabilitate them, he said.
