Baglihar dam no violation to Indus treaty: India Thursday, December 16 2004 10:32 Hrs (IST) - World Time
Islamabad:
Asserting that the construction of hydroelectric dam on the river Chenab at Baglihar in Jammu and Kashmir was in no violation of the 1960 Indus Water Treaty, India yesterday (Dec 15, 2204) provided additional data on the project wanted by Pakistan as a goodwill gesture.
Indian officials, who are currently in Pakistan for holding talks on nuclear and conventional CBMs (Confidence Building Measures), also took the opportunity to present the additional data wanted by Pakistan on the dam as a "goodwill gesture".
Officials said that Pakistan has been informed that talks at the level of Water Secretaries could be considered after Pakistan studied the data.
While presenting the data, Indian officials have told the Pakistan side that India has fully complied with the provisions of the Indus Water Treaty while building 430 mw hydro electric project and rejected Pakistan stand that it is in violation of the treaty, they said.
India has provided the additional data as a goodwill gesture, though technically it was not required to do so, they said, adding that talks could be considered at a later stage.
While accusing India of violating the treaty, Pakistan has been saying that it seriously considered the option of approaching the World Bank for third party arbitration.
Pakistan's stand is that the treaty, which specified the utilisation of six rivers flowing from India provided a clause for third party arbitration.
