India likely to accept UNSC seat minus veto power
Saturday, December 18 2004 20:22 Hrs (IST) - World Time

New Delhi: Government is looking at the possibility of India accepting permanent membership of an enlarged UN Security Council without veto powers and push for such rights after getting in.

New Delhi, which has been pressing its claim for a permanent seat, is not in favour of becoming a semi-permanent member of the Security Council, Government sources said today (Dec 18, 2004).

Though UK, France and Russia, three of the five Permanent Members of the Security Council, support India's candidature, New Delhi is well aware that getting veto rights may not be an easy task.

Under the new thinking, India should become a permanent member and gradually work for veto powers even if it took some time.

India has been receiving the backing of a number of countries including Japan, Germany and Brazil.
