Saturday, December 18 2004 14:56 Hrs (IST) - World Time

Pune: The CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) today (Dec 18, 2004) submitted before a local court that some of the accused in multi-crore-stamp paper scam have refused to give their voice samples, necessary for investigation into the case.

Additional SP of CBI, S K Peshin submitted before Additional Sessions Judge V V Borikar, presiding the Special MCOCA court in view of Special Judge S M Shembole being on leave, that though he had court's permission to take voice samples of six accused, some of them were not allowing him to do his duty.

One of the accused said that he has not refused as he wanted to know why was his voice sample being taken by CBI when his name did not figure anywhere. Another accused said they wished to see the transcripts before giving voice samples because they feared that CBI could forge the transcripts.

Many other accused complained to the court that they were being harassed in the jail, by being denied medicine and meet their relatives, who lived faraway.

They also said that despite Supreme Court's order, they were being handcuffed when brought to the court. Intervening, Special Public Prosecutor Raja Thakre said that the accused should not be handcuffed at least when on the premises of the court.

Following prayers from many accused, Judge Borikar allowed the relatives of the accused to meet them within the court premises. But he did not accede to the request of allowing medicines to be given to the accused inside the precints of the court saying, "What do we know about the contents of these medicines, which are sought to be given."
