Tax aftershock hits Khan's concert organisers in SL Sunday, December 19 2004 14:41 Hrs (IST) - World Time
Colombo:
Sri Lankan authorities have ordered banks not to repatriate any proceeds of Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan's recent Colombo concert, where a bomb blast left two people dead and 19 injured, until the organisers produce proof that they paid all taxes due to the State.
The directive from Sri Lanka's Inland Revenue Department came after it "moved in to investigate whether the beneficiaries from the show adhered to tax formalities," 'The Sunday Times' newspaper reported today (Dec 19, 2004).
The local organisers of the 'Temptation 2004' show were not immediately available for comment while the tax department said they will not discuss individual cases because of secrecy laws.
More than 20,000 people attended the December 11 musical show billed as the biggest concert this year. Fans paid between $ 25 to $ 100 for a ticket.
The show was abruptly ended when an unidentified attacker lobbed a grenade towards the stage, killing a fan and a press photographer and wounding 19 others. Khan and his troupe escaped unhurt.
Police have made no breakthrough in the case, but have arrested a man who took part in protests led by Buddhist clergy ahead of the show which coincided with the first death anniversary of a popular monk.
