Beware of US entry in Indo-Pak talks on Kashmir! Sunday, December 19 2004 14:51 Hrs (IST) - World Time
Bangalore:
The All India Kashmiri Samaj (AIKS) today (Dec 19, 2004) warned that the United States might intervene in the peace talks between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir dispute and try to tilt the balance in favour of Islamabad.
"The ever-present danger, however is that the US will intervene from the sidelines and try to tilt the balance in favour of Pakistan," AIKS president M K Kaw said in Bangalore in his address at the Global Meet of Kashmiri Pandits.
"We tend to forget that India with its size, vast population and stable polity poses a danger to US dominance in this part of the world, while Pakistan has always been ready to oblige the super power. If other factors do not supervene, the natural proclivity of the US would be to go for a solution that will weaken India. The latest massive arms package to Pakistan has to be viewed in this light," he said.
Kaw said that the Kashmiri Pandits were not hopeful of a lasting solution to the dispute in the ongoing peace talks due to the divergent views of both the countries.
"It is another matter that taking the highly different perspectives that both sides bear upon the problem it is extremely doubtful that any consensus would emerge. The most probable scenario as of today seems to be that they will meet and talk and meet again and talk again, and a solution will continue to elude them," he said.
Kaw said India has made numerous overtures to Pakistan, but there has been no warmth in their response.
