The police infrastructure in West Bengal was the best in the country, the Director General of Police Shyamal Kumar Dutta said in Siliguri today (Dec 21, 2004).
Addressing a press conference, Dutta said that the infrastructural development had boosted the morale of the police force and their confidence to accept any challenges to maintain peace and harmony in the State.
Giving an account of infrastructural development in recent times, Dutta said that West Bengal was the only State in the country where 'poll-net' was introduced with the facility any police official would have direct talks to any 'thana' in any corner of the State. This would help to nail absconding miscreants and identify the culprits, he said.
The DGP said a model police station was set up at Barrackpore where new entrant Sub-inspectors would have practical experience. Some important thanas were divided to help them work in a more effective way. Police was provided with sufficient modern equipments, arms and ammunitions besides cars to effectively combat 'Jana Juddha' force in South Bengal, KLO and others in North Bengal. Video cameras were set up in busy and important police stations, he said.
Stating that steps had been taken to solve housing and health problems of the force, he said every uniformed persons was provided with medical insurance. 80 post of Inspectors, 101 Sub-inspectors and 1,000 male and 200 female post of constables were created to strengthen the force, the Director General said.
Dutta today inaugurated the Mathgara police housing complex and handed over keys of 32 ownership flats to the policemen.
