UPA Govt betrayed people on Employment Bill: BJP
Wednesday, December 22 2004 10:19 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) last night (Dec 21, 2004) alleged that the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government had "betrayed" people on the Employment Guarantee Bill as it had not fulfilled the promises made with regard to provision of jobs.

"It is a great betrayal," BJP Parliamentary party spokesman V K Malhotra told reporters in New Delhi.

He said that prior to the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress and its president Sonia Gandhi had been assuring provision of job to one member of each poor family everywhere.

But the Bill, which was introduced in Lok Sabha, specifies the provision for providing 100 days of work that too only in rural areas, Malhotra said.

He alleged that the Bill had diluted the Food-for-Work programme.
