Cell phones, TVs seized in raid on Purnia jail
Friday, December 24 2004 13:15 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Purnia: In an early morning swoop, the police seized mobile phones, coloured TVs and chargers during a raid on the Purnia divisional jail this morning (Dec 24, 2004), Superintendent of Police Sudhanshu Kumar said.

Kumar said that a police team led by him raided the jail at 3:00 hrs (IST) and seized five cell phones, chargers and three coloured TV sets.

The prohibited articles were recovered from notorious gangsters Amarjit, Vinay Kumar Yadav and Nishi Yadav, besides some other inmates.

According to official sources, the district authorities are planning to shift some dreaded criminals lodged at Purnia jail to some other prison after the seizure.

When contacted, Inspector General (Jails) Deepak Kumar Singh said at Patna that any action against the officials of Purnia jail would be taken only after receiving the report of the District Magistrate.

The Bihar jail administration has been pulled up by the Patna High Court recently in the wake of accusations of inmates running their kidnapping and extortion racket from behind the bars.

The court had recently ordered frequent raids on jails to check such activities of the jailbirds and in one such raid on the Beur central jail in the capital, a mobile phone was seized from controversial RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) MP from Madhepura Pappu Yadav.
