Toll reaches 123 in Kerala; number likely to rise Monday, December 27 2004 10:52 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Thiruvananthapuram:
The casualty caused by the Tsunami that lashed Kerala's Southern coast rose to 123 with two more bodies recovered since last night (Dec 26, 2004) and the toll is likely to mount as the day wears on, police said.
The State Cabinet in Thiruvananthapuram is holding a special meeting to review the situation and decide on the quantum of relief for the victims' families, who mostly are traditional fisher folk.
One body each was recovered from Kollam and Alappuzha since late last night.
The searchers comprising police, fire force, Navy and Coast Guard personnel resumed search for bodies in the wave-ravaged fishing hamlets in the two districts.
Medical and paramedical personnel, aided by voluntary agencies, have also been active in the area.
Over 40,000 persons are living in relief camps after the State witnessed its grimmest natural tragedy.
About 800 people have been admitted to hospitals with injuries as thousands in the two districts became homeless and their boats and fishing implements washed away by the waves.
