New Delhi:
A series of strong earthquakes rocked Andaman and Nicobar Islands this morning (Dec 29, 2004) as aftershocks continued to rattle the region three days after the devastating quake off Indonesian coast, which triggered Tsunami waves killing over 50,000 people across south and southeast Asia.
So far 54 aftershocks have rocked the region after the Sunday's (Dec 26, 2004) massive earthquake.
Two quakes, measuring 5.7 and 6.1 on the Richter scale, jolted the island territory in the span of 10 minutes just after 07:00 hrs (IST) today, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in New Delhi.
While the epicentre of the first quake was near Camotra in the Little Nicobar Islands, the second was centred near Car Nicobar Islands, which witnessed widespread devastation caused by Sunday's giant waves.
Another moderate quake, measuring 5.4, occurred at 07:44 hrs (IST) off the west coast of Andaman.
It was not yet clear whether any fresh casualty or damage was caused by the latest quakes.
An earthquake measuring 5.1, with an epicentre near the south of Little Andaman islands, shook the region at 22:41 hrs (IST) yesterday (Dec 27, 2004).
Over 3,000 people have been killed in Andaman and Nicobar Islands by the Tsunami waves.
Aftershocks continued to jolt Indonesia too, with an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale being felt near the country's west coast at around 20:19 hrs (IST) hours yesterday.
