Carlos Moya of Spain, who retained the ATP Tour Chennai Open Singles title in Chennai last night (Jan 9, 2005), has donated his prize money of $ 52,000 (approx Rs 24 Lakh) for the tsunami victims.
The Spaniard, who announced his decision to donate his prize money on Jan 2, declared at the prize distribution ceremony after clinching his second back-to-back title, that he was giving the money to the UNICEF.
Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand, who lost to Moya 6-3 4-6 6-7 (5), took home $ 30,600. The Thai had expressed a week ago that he would be donating his prize money to the Thailand Government for the tsunami victims relief fund.
On the eve of the tournament, tennis stars, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathui (India), Jonas Bjorkman (Sweden) and Rainer Schuettler (Germany) besides other players have all made known their decision to donate for the tsunami victims relief fund.
