A team of seven volunteers from the Washington-based NGO Asian Development Fund have taken over the work of repair of boats and fishing equipments at the Akkarai Ghori village in this district where 400 houses have been destroyed by the tidal waves.
"When we read about the scale of the disaster, hundreds of Indians living in USA decided to get together and form a fund to support at least one village," a team member who did not wanted to be quoted, said.
"We have an initial estimate of around $ 200,000 and some contributions have also come from our American colleagues," he said.
"The village of Akkarai Ghori, about seven kms from the main town has been ignored to some extent by most NGOs since there have been no loss of life reported there. But the fishing hamlet with a population of over 2500 have undergone severe damage. The village has about 700 huts, 400 of which have been destroyed completely," he said.
"We decided to take up the restoration of at least the fishing equipment like boats and nets here and stay until they go back to sea to fish," he said.
