Indian satellites map damage in Lanka, Indonesia Friday, January 14 2005 15:50 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Bangalore:
Indian remote sensing satellites have captured images of tsunami hit regions in Sri Lanka and Indonesia, besides the coastal areas including the Andaman and Nicobar islands, a top space agency official said today (Jan 14, 2005).
"Our satellites have taken images of the impact in the Andaman and Nicobar islands, the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and also some of the pictures on the impact of the damage in Sri Lanka and Indonesia has also been collected," Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman G Madhavan Nair told reporters in Bangalore on the sidelines of the launch of DataOne broadband services by BSNL.
Nair said ISRO's satellites and aerial surveillance aircraft have generated data from the disaster trial of the tsunami in the coastline of both India and its neighbours.
He said the satellite data has been dispatched to State and district headquarters to assess the damage effected by the killer tsunami which in turn will help in reconstruction of the damaged areas.
Soon after the tsunami struck in the Indian shores, Nair had said, ISRO was updating the Crisis Management Group (CMG) at the Centre with images captured by India's satellites for relief and rescue operations, besides making an immediate assessment of the damage.
