Sonia seeks Canada's support for India's UNSC bid

New Delhi: UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi today (Jan 18, 2005) sought Canada's support for India in its bid to become a permanent member of an enlarged UN Security Council (UNSC).

Gandhi, who is also Congress President, made the request during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin at 10, Janpath.

During the meeting, Gandhi welcomed Canada's readiness to work together with India and other countries in developing an international tsunami early warning system and step up bilateral cooperation in science and technology, environment and health.

The two leaders also underlined the close friendship between the two countries and their bonding as members of the Commonwealth.
