India and Pakistan have agreed not to heighten tension along the border following the firing incident in Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir and were taking steps to maintain the spirit of confidence-building, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said today (Jan 20, 2005).
"Both sides have agreed that nothing should be done to heighten tension," he told reporters after meeting the children who received bravery awards, when asked about the Tuesday (Jan 18, 2005) night firing incident.
"Both sides are taking up measures to maintain the spirit of confidence building," Mukherjee said.
Asked whether the Government proposed to take up the matter at the political level, he said, "Not at the political level but at the operational officers' level", referring to the meeting at the level of the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO).
