At least 42 killed in bus crash in N- western Nepal

Kathmandu: A bus carrying a wedding party skidded off a mountainous road and plunged some 100 metres down into a stream N Western Nepal, killing at least 42 passengers and injuring 17, police said today (Jan 22, 2005).

The bridegroom was seriously injured in the mishap, according to police sources.

The accident happened in the remote South-western district of Pyuthan, some 325 kilometres west of Kathmandu.

The overcrowded bus was travelling from Sonpur in Dang, in far South-western Nepal.

At the time of the mishap, many passengers were travelling on the roof of the bus.

Rescue teams were recovering bodies from the bottom of the ravine into which the bus fell.
