Wednesday, January 26 2005 16:15 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Allahabad: BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party) workers went on a rampage in Allahabad today (Jan 26, 2005) fighting pitched battles with the police as the body of party MLA Raju Pal, who was shot dead along with two others last evening (Jan 25, 2005), was consigned to flames under heavy security arrangement.

More than 200 of Pal's supporters, mainly from his native village Neewa near Allahabad, indulged in heavy brick-batting, attempted to set afire a police station and attacked the house of the brother of SP MLA Atiq Ahmed here alleging that their leader was cremated without even informing his family members.

However, I G Police A C Sharma denied the charge and said, the last rites were performed by Pal's maternal aunt's son.

Dhumanganj police station area, where Pal was shot dead by unidentified assailants yesterday, wore a curfew-bound look with access to the area being barred and police cordoning off the entire zone.

Unconfirmed reports said a person was killed in the mob violence but according to SSP Sunil Gupta, he had no such information so far.

He said a strong police force had been rushed to the area and they were still trying to control the situation.
