Ranchi:
Congress MLA Dev Kumar Dhan is among the six candidates who were arrested and sent to jail yesterday (Jan 25, 2005) in connection with old cases.
Police, who served them with non-bailable arrest warrants, waited till Dhan (Mandar), Bandhu Tirkey (Jharkhand Janadhikar manch-Mandar), Uday Shankar Ojha (LJP-Hatia) and Sushila Ekka (IND-Khijri) submitted their nominations before taking them into custody, police said in Ranchi.
Two candidates including BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) nominee from Chakradharpur Assembly constituency and also the West Singhbhum district president of the party, Laxman Gilua were also arrested.
Police said that arrest warrants had been issued against Gilua and Sona Devgam, a Vananchal Pradesh Congress candidate from Chaibasa Assembly seat, in connection with a criminal case lodged under Chaibasa Muffasil Police Station in September last year.
The police have stepped up executing NBWs after Chief Election Commissioner T S Krishnamurthy had recently expressed his displeasure over the slow pace of carrying them out.
