Sikh riots: Cong, BJP trade charges on Nanavati Friday, January 28 2005 11:54 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Congress and BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) yesterday (Jan 27, 2005) traded charges in the wake of the reported recommendation by Justice Nanavati Commission, which probed the anti-Sikh riots in New Delhi in 1984, that the re-investigation of cases against some Congress leaders be done.
Reacting to the report to be submitted on January 31, party spokesman Anand Sharma said, "BJP's campaign has been slanderous, motivated and that has now been exposed."
BJP hit back saying, "All commissions had blamed Congress," for the anti-Sikh riots following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
"All Commissions had blamed Congress. I said when the report comes, then it would be proper to comment," said party spokesman V K Malhotra.
The Commission's report is understood not to have blamed the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi for the riots.
