A series of moderate intensity aftershocks rattled Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Sumatra today (Jan 29, 2005), more than a month after the region was devastated by the quake-generated tsunami.
Two moderate temblors of 5.4 intensity rattled the Andaman Islands today. The quakes, epicentred in the North Andaman region, were recorded at 0544 hours (IST) and 1114 hours (IST), the Met Department said.
A quake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale was felt off the East coast of Car Nicobar at 0908 hours (IST), it said.
Camorta Island in the Nicobar region was rattled by three moderate intensity aftershocks in the early hours. A quake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale occurred at 0049 hours (IST) with its epicentre located north of the island.
While a 5.2 intensity tremor was registered at 0406 hours (IST), again epicentred north of Camorta, the island was rocked by a temblor of 5.3 intensity at 0644 hours (IST).
Two aftershocks jolted Sumatra today, where the quake-triggered tsunami had originated on December 26.
While an aftershock measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale was recorded off the North coast of Sumatra at 0720 hours (IST), a quake of 5.4 intensity was experienced off the West Coast of Sumatra at 1141 hours (IST).
