The Tamil Nadu Government today (Jan 29, 2005) announced Rs 396 crore relief package for the Tsunami affected fishermen in the state.
Announcing the package, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, in a statement, said that fishermen would be given Rs 32,000 each as subsidy for purchasing wooden catamarans or a 35 per cent subsidy to buy motorised fiber catamarans and fishing nets, subject to a maximum of Rs 52,600.
For repairing damaged catamarans, the assistance would be increased from the present Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000. For mechanised boats, 60 per cent of the repair expenses would be sanctioned, subject to a maximum of Rs 3 lakh, she said.
Jayalalithaa demanded that the Center fully subsidise the purchase of catamarans and mechanised boats, instead of a partial subsidy. The rest of the amount should be extended as bank loans, to be repaid in seven years.
The Chief Minister said that she had already taken up the matter with union agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, when he met her in Chennai on January 23.
