Kanchi Mutt accountant Viswanatha granted bail Monday, January 31 2005 19:34 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Kancheepuram:
Viswanatha Iyer, Kanchi Mutt accountant, was granted bail by a sessions court at Chengalpattu, near Kancheepuram this evening (Jan 31, 2005).
Sessions court Judge Akbar Ali granted the bail to Viswanatha Iyer in the case known as 'tampering of records' of the Mutt.
The special team investigating the murder of temple official, Sankararaman, arrested Iyer on Jan 4, 2005 on charges of 'fudging' the accounts and tampering with the records of the Shankara Mutt books.
His bail application was rejected by the Kancheepuram Judicial Magistrate-I court and an appeal was made at the Sessions Court, Chengalpattu on Jan 27.
During the hearing on that day, counsel for Defence appealed to the Judge that considering his age (Iyer is 75) and that the offence was bailable, Iyer's plea for bail must be granted. The orders were then posted for today.
