Terrorism has to be abandoned by Pak, says India Monday, January 31 2005 21:04 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Asking Pakistan to do much more to dismantle terrorist infrastructure in that country, India today (Jan 31, 2005) made it clear that there can be no bargaining or conditions imposed while fulfilling this pledge.
India's concern over the existence of terrorist training camps, launch pads, communication linkages and other apparatus in Pakistan is likely to be raised by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his meeting with Pakistan counterpart Shaukat Aziz in Dhaka on the margins of the upcoming SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) Summit.
"We cannot deflect from this aspect. Terrorism has to be abandoned and cannot be made a condition on India fulfilling this or that," official sources said in New Delhi contending "there can be no bargaining on this" and that Pakistan has to honour its promise of not allowing its territory for cross-border terrorism.
"It is an issue of major concern which will be addressed," the sources said when asked if the Prime Minister will take up this issue with Aziz next week.
Brushing Pakistan's contention that India was dragging its feet on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir, the sources said, "We have no intention to put it on the backburner, sideline it or shelve it".
New Delhi has made it clear that its emphasis on trying to promote people-to-people contacts and other Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs) were "integral" in the search for a mutually acceptable solution to the J&K issue.
