Goa Assembly to meet tomorrow for trial of strength
Tuesday, February 1 2005 13:43 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Panaji: Goa Assembly will meet tomorrow (Feb 02, 2005) for a trial of strength following the political crisis in which the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) Government has been reduced to a minority.

Sources said that the House will meet at 14:30 hrs (IST) when Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will move a single-line resolution affirming the faith of the House in his Government.

The Governor S C Jamir is likely to send a communication in this regard to Speaker Vishwas Satarkar to convene the House tomorrow, the sources said. The Cabinet had yesterday (Jan 31, 2005) recommended to the Governor convening of the house on February 3 for the trial of strength.

After the resignation of four MLAs including three from BJP plunging the Government in a crisis, the strength of the House has been reduced to 36.

Both BJP and Congress-led combinations now have a strength of 18 each. BJP's 18 includes the Speaker and UGDP (United Goan Democratic Party) MLA and Tourism Minister Matani Saldhana.

However, Parrikar has expressed confidence that he would prove his majority on the floor of the House.
