BJP will not demand fresh election in Tamil Nadu Thursday, February 3 2005 14:36 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Chennai:
BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) today (Feb 03, 2005) said that it would not demand re-poll in all the 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu as sought by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on the ground that there was a "big fraud" in the preparation of electoral rolls.
"There are serious allegations about the fairness of the polls (2004 Lok Sabha polls), but we are not demanding re-poll. We will prepare for the next polls," former BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu told reporters in Chennai when his reaction was sought to the demand made by Jayalalithaa on the floor of the State Assembly yesterday (Feb 02, 2005).
He said that his party had accepted the mandate of the people and "we prefer to sit in the opposition."
Yesterday, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had said that her party would move the Supreme Court seeking to declare elections to all the 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu as null and void. She wanted the Election Commission (EC) to order fresh polls as the EC had found there was a "big fraud" in the preparation of electoral rolls.
