One-and-half-year old Arpit Diwan, who was kidnapped in the capital on January 31, was rescued today (Feb 5, 2005) in Sundergarh district of Orissa.
Orissa police, acting on a tip-off that the prime suspect in the kidnapping, the family maid Savitri Minz had arrived in the district, raided a premises in a village near Rourkela, rescuing the boy and arresting the maid, Sundergarh SP Y K Jethwa said.
"The one-and-a-half-year-old child Arpit Diwan was rescued safely and we are in touch with Delhi Police for carrying out the formalities," he said.
Jethwa said the Oriya maid Savitri, the main suspect from the start to whom the child's distraught parents even appealed through media to return the child, has been detained.
Arpit was kidnapped from Sriniwaspuri area of the south Delhi.
Preliminary interrogation has revealed that frustration was the reason behind the crime.
Jethwa said the parents of the child and top Delhi Police officials have been informed.
Orissa police had formed a special team to search for the child, he said.
