We have no intention to topple Mulayam Govt: Cong Sunday, February 6 2005 17:11 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Raipur:
Congress today (Feb 6, 2005) said it had no intention to topple the Mulayam Singh Government, although it wanted to strengthen party organisations in four States, including Uttar Pradesh.
"Where is the question of toppling the Mulayam Government when we are extending support to it?" senior Congress leader and Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh told reporters in Raipur.
"Despite Samajwadi Party's (SP) statement that they do not need Congress support, the party had been extending that as toppling Government cannot be a whimsical decision", he said.
To a query on threats from Left parties he said, "Neither I have heard about that nor that would have any impact on us". But he said to defeat the communal forces, there was need for Left and other parties to come together and added that the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government would complete its full five- year terms.
On fielding Congress candidates opposite allies in Bihar and Jharkhand Assembly polls, Singh said, "They are searching their own place and (it is) not fighting against each other".
He also denied that Congress has deserted the economic policies introduced by former leaders Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi saying Congress has not diverted from that.
Earlier, speaking to Congress workers on the condition of the party in four States Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chattisgarh, he said in a choked voice, "these four States were the forts of Congress but today I feel hurt seeing the position of the party there".
