Global strategies for global warming a must: UK Monday, February 7 2005 15:53 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Bangalre:
Countries need to evolve joint global strategies to combat varied climatic changes resulting from Global Warming and work together on the issue, Sir David King, Chief Scientific Advisor to the British Government said in Bangalore today (Feb 7, 2005).
"Climate change is a priority for Britain and EU nations in 2005. Global collaboration will however depend upon individual countries having a clear vision of energy futures and how critical research is to the development of new technology options", he told reporters.
"We have to adapt in preparation of the significant changes ahead and manage the risks", King said, adding, the need for the "biggest change is in the energy industry".
We have to actively mitigate against the production of greenhouse gases by reducing dependence on fossil fuel and switching to low carbon energy sources, he said.
This calls for increasing use of renewable and low carbon dioxide emitting energy sources and encouraging greater energy efficiency by thinking on the lines of Fusion energy, he said.
The United Kingdom is already committed to this course of action and has published a paper in 2003 focusing on cutting emissions of carbon dioxide by 60 per cent around 2050, he said.
