Geelani regains consciousness, speaks to family

New Delhi: The condition of S A R Geelani, who was shot at last night, has improved slightly, his family members said today (Feb 09, 2005).

Bismillah Geelani, brother of Geelani said that the family spoke to him early this morning after he regained consciousness, following an operation.

When asked about the condition of Geelani, he said, "It has improved slightly but we are keeping our fingers crossed. He spoke to us for a brief while."

He said that Geelani had received three bullet injuries, one each in stomach, abdomen and right shoulder. "All three bullets have been removed in the operation," Bismillah Geelani said.

Meanwhile, the attack on Geelani is being investigated by the crime branch of Delhi police, police said.

Angry scenes were witnessed late last night (Feb 08, 2005) outside AIIMS as Geelani's supporters demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident.

Geelani was rushed to AIIMS after he was shot outside his lawyer Nandita Haksar's residence in Vasant Enclave locality at around 21:00 hrs (IST) last night.

Geelani was among the four people who were accused of masterminding the December 13, 2001 Parliament attack. However, he and Navjot Sandhu alias Afsan Guru were acquitted by the Delhi High Court.

Geelani and two others Afzal, Shaukat Hussain had been sentenced to death by a trial court on December 18, 2002.

Delhi police had already moved Supreme Court for review of the High Court order, and the case was being argued in the Apex Court.
