Mulayam Govt in the line of fire now, says Mamata
Wednesday, February 9 2005 22:35 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee today (Feb 9, 2005) alleged that after removing the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) Government in Goa in a "midnight operation", the CPM (Communist Party of India-Marxist)-backed UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government was now "targeting the Mulayam Singh Government in Uttar Pradesh", and said that her party would oppose if they resorted to any such "unconstitutional move".

"The Congress-led UPA Government adopted a vindictive attitude. Now they are planning to dismiss the Mulayam Government in UP. But we will oppose any such unconstitutional move. We are not going to tolerate it any more although we have differences with Samajwadi party on many issues," Banerjee told a meeting at the end of the three-day dharna in protest against hike in FDI cap in telecom sector.

The TC chief said that in Goa the Manohar Parrikar Government was dismissed shortly after it had won the trust vote. "They may have reservation against the Speaker's ruling but in the Assembly, Speaker is all in all. They could have taken legal recourse. But they dismissed the BJP Ministry and installed Congress Government," Banerjee said and asked, "Why can't they take such step in Left-ruled West Bengal which had taken away the democratic rights of the people?"

Harping on the "Congress-CPM friendship", the TC chief said that Congress which had majority in the Upper House, had refused to support any move to impose President's rule in the State during the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) rule.

Turning to the increase in FDI cap in telecom sector, Banerjee said that the UPA Government had taken the decision after consulting the CPM and other Left parties and demanded a white paper on it.
