In an effort to guage the status of human rights in India, former UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros Ghali yesterday (Feb 8, 2005) visited the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), interacting with its chairperson and members.
Ghali, who is chairperson of the South Centre Board, which studies the various aspects of globalisation as they affect the developing countries, met NHRC chairperson Justice A S Anand, members and top officials of the human rights watchdog, NHRC sources said.
The former UN Secretary General, who belongs to Egypt, was accompanied to the meeting by the Egyptian Ambassador, the sources said.
Ghali is in India for the first South Centre Board meeting in the country today (Feb 9, 2005).
The Centre studies the impact of globalisation on developing countries and a major part of the current work programme of the South Centre is on WTO (World Trade Organisation)-related issues.
