BJP flays UPA for not making Nanavati report public Thursday, February 10 2005 10:02 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) yesterday (Feb 9, 2005) alleged that the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government had deliberately avoided making the Nanavati Commission report public as it was apparently worried of an electoral fallout of the findings into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in which several Congress leaders were accused.
"The Congress-led Government went to town with the findings of the U C Banerjee Committee report (on Godhra train fire) as soon as it was presented although it was only interim and not the final conclusion.
"But the same yardstick has not been followed in the case of Nanavati Commission's final findings," BJP Vice President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said after the report on the 1984 Delhi anti-Sikh riots was presented to Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil in New Delhi.
He alleged that the report was deliberately kept under the "veil of secrecy" as several Congress leaders were accused in the riots and any adverse finding could spoil the party's prospects in the upcoming two rounds of elections in Bihar and Jharkhand.
"The approach of the UPA Government is clearly hypocritical and reflects double standards," Naqvi alleged, while daring the Government to make the report public now.
