CPM demands protection of the 'right to strike' Friday, February 11 2005 15:06 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Kamarhati (WB):
The Communist Party of India Marxist (CPM) yesterday (Feb 10, 2005) called for legislative measures to protect the worker's "inalienable" right to strike in the backdrop of a spate of court verdicts against the bandhs and similar protests.
Expressing serious concern over the various judgments "seeking to suppress the right to strike and other forms of protest", a resolution adopted at the State Conference of CPM said, "We are demanding to the Central Government for taking steps for ensuring the right to strike as a fundamental right in the constitution."
Observing "the right to strike is the basic and inalienable right of the working class and the citizens of the country," the CPM politburo member and party's West Bengal State Secretary Anil Biswas said, neither the working class nor the trade union movement could agree to abrogation of this right.
He said the party decided to approach the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government to make a "suitable legislative provision" to protect the right to strike.
