Police claims to have clues in Geelani attack case Friday, February 11 2005 09:58 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Amidst mounting pressure on it to crack the S A R Geelani attack case, Delhi Police yesterday (Feb 10, 2005) claimed to have obtained "certain clues" although it was unable to talk to the Delhi University lecturer, who was acquitted in the Parliament attack case.
Several people, including those close to Geelani, have been questioned so far even as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil are understood to have sought an update from Delhi Police Commissioner K K Paul in the case.
"We have got certain clues and we are working on these," Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ranjit Narayan said, refusing to elaborate.
While police continued to be tight-lipped about the number of the assailants, their identity or the motive, Geelani's associates at Zakir Hussain College and some human rights activists continued to stage protests and maintain allegations that police was behind the attack.
Police are trying to verify Geelani's movements on Monday (Feb 7, 2005) and have questioned the people with whom he spent time, police sources said.
Geelani's mobile phone records are also being scrutinised to establish some link to the attackers.
Several persons, some of them close to Geelani, are under the scanner of the police, as personal rivalry being the motive for the attack has not been ruled out.
