'UPA hiding Nanavati report to save Cong leaders' Friday, February 11 2005 20:25 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Kolkata:
BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) today (Feb 11, 2005) charged that the Congress-led UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government at the Centre was "hiding the Nanavati Commission report on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots to save some Congress leaders", and demanded that it be made public immediately.
Senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi told a press conference in Kolkata that the UPA Government, which had made public the interim report of the U C Banerjee Commission on the Godhra incident, was "hiding" the Nanavati Commission report "purely to save some Congress leaders involved in the riot."
"Nobody should be protected if the report indicted any person. But it is strange that the Central Government is sitting pretty on the Nanavati Commission report," he said.
Joshi also demanded the recall of Goa Governor S C Jamir for "dismissing the legally-elected Government in the State after won the vote of confidence in the Assembly".
"Jamir's appointment as Goa Governor itself had a design behind it. He was intentionally sent to Goa to dismiss the Parrikar Government," Joshi alleged.
Stating that the Manohar Parrikar Government was ousted in a "shameful and unconstitutional manner", he said that the BJP Government should be restored.
Joshi who is leaving for Goa tomorrow to participate in a dharna to protest the dismissal of the Parrikar Government, said that BJP has adopted a two-pronged strategy on this issue. The party has moved the High Court in Mumbai and has also gone to the people, he said.
